The Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund, founded in 2003, funds cancer-related research and community projects in the State of Minnesota. The mission is to support research, prevention, treatment and other needs of the cancer community throughout the State of Minnesota. With an operating budget of less than 10%, more than 90 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to the charity. The main event, The Randy Shaver Celebrity Golf Classic began in 1995, raising $27,000. It has grown to be arguably one of Minnesota’s most successful charitable golf tournaments. To date, nearly four million dollars has been raised to support cancer research and educational programs in Minnesota. The Sports Director at KARE 11 news in Minneapolis, Randy has always focused on cancer research and Minnesota’s Cancer Community. However, the fight became personal after the 1998 tournament when he was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s Disease. His treatment and current remission prove that this community and its generosity have made an impact with Randy and others like him. Grants given by the foundation are spent on technology and tools that enhance early detection and treatment of cancer, promising new programs that promote research that would help prevent cancer relapses, projects that demonstrate research in the area of cancer, and programs that enhance the lives of Minnesota’s Cancer Community by providing aid and assistance.
